Before you apply

What to know before you apply from Algeria

Italy has no national deadline. Your school sets the date, and the visa follows it. Start here.

Your route

Every route starts on Universitaly, the ministry's portal. You pre-enrol there for one course.

  • A university degree

Pre-enrol on Universitaly for a bachelor's (laurea) or master's (laurea magistrale) course. The university checks your file and validates it.

  • A conservatory or an art academy

AFAM diplomas go through the same Universitaly pre-enrolment. The institution then sets its own admission test, such as an audition or a portfolio.

  • Your diploma

A first degree needs a secondary diploma after at least 12 years of schooling. Each school decides whether it wants a CIMEA attestation or a Declaration of Value.

  • Bac only or a first year done

The procedure is the same. Whether a year already studied counts toward your Italian degree is the school's decision.

Dates

The national dates for a 2026-2027 or 2027-2028 start. Your school's own pre-enrolment date comes first, and it is often earlier.

  1. Passed

The ministries publish the procedures for 2026-2027 and 2027-2028

  2. Next

Last day for a 2026-2027 visa application to reach the embassy

  3. Not enrolled on Universitaly by this day: the 2026-2027 visa is revoked

  4. Last day for a 2027-2028 visa application to reach the embassy

Each university and AFAM institution publishes its pre-enrolment date per course on its own site. Tell us which school you want and our team checks its calendar with you.

Language level

You need a B2 certificate in the language your course is taught in, covering listening, reading, speaking and writing.

For an English-taught course: IELTS, TOEFL or a similar internationally recognised certificate, or an equivalent certificate from the university itself. For an Italian-taught course: an Italian certificate at B2 or above.

Visa

Once your school validates your pre-enrolment, VFS Global contacts you for a visa appointment in Algiers. You don't book it yourself.

  • A type D study visa

The embassy's consular section decides. Every application filed correctly is examined and gets a decision.

  • Wait for the invitation

Appointments go out on a progressive calendar. Emailing the same request again does not speed it up, and the embassy asks students not to.

  • Proof of funds

From lawful, traceable sources, your own or your family's. A scholarship counts once it is awarded, not while you wait for it. The yearly figure is in the Costs tab.

  • Somewhere to live

You need suitable accommodation in Italy. An application for a university residence place does not count on its own.

Costs

A public university's fees depend on your family's income and on the course, for EU and non-EU students alike. Italy has no single figure: Universitaly shows the fees for each course.

  • Proof of funds for the visa: €10,179.85 a year

The amount the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 procedures ask you to show for each year of study.

  • Residence permit: generally €116.46

For a stay of up to one year, per Study in Italy (checked October 2026). Costs may vary: check the payment slips in the post office kit.

  • Regional fee

Always due and paid by the student, even when a university waives its own fees for a scholarship holder.

  • MAECI scholarship: €10,800 for 9 months

The Italian government grant for 2026-2027, with tuition waived, per the University of Pisa. See the Scholarships tab for who can apply.

Scholarships

Algeria is on the list of countries eligible for the Italian government's MAECI scholarships (2026-2027 call).

  • Who can apply

New applicants choose a master's degree, an AFAM diploma, a PhD, a research project or an intensive Italian course. A first-year bachelor's is not open to new applicants, but a first-level AFAM diploma is.

  • How to apply

Free, and only on the Study in Italy portal. The grant and your enrolment are two separate procedures: you still pre-enrol on Universitaly.

  • Your file

PDF scans of the originals, no translation needed. A motivation letter of 500 words at most. A language certificate on the CEFR scale; the Duolingo English Test counts for English only.

  • The 2026-2027 call is closed

Its last documents were due on 1 July 2026. Plan your file for the next call.

Work

A study residence permit lets you work up to 20 hours a week, up to 1,040 hours across the year.

During official university breaks you may work full time.

After you land

Apply for your residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) within 8 working days of arriving in Italy.

  • The post office kit

Pick up the yellow kit at a post office with a Sportello Amico desk. Send copies, never originals. The Questura then takes your fingerprints.

  • Your tax code

The codice fiscale, 16 characters, opens a bank account, a lease, a phone contract and the national health service. Your name must match your passport exactly.

  • An Italian SIM

The Questura texts you when your permit is ready to collect.

  • Renew early

Ask for the renewal at least 60 days before your permit expires.

From our team

Three things we tell every student

  • Pick the school before the date

Italy has no national pre-enrolment deadline. Your school's date is your deadline, and some close in July for a September start.

  • Get your B2 certificate first

The language certificate goes into the Universitaly file and the visa file. Book the test early so the result is ready before you pre-enrol.

  • Prepare funds and housing with the file

The visa asks for proof of funds and a place to live. Gather both while you wait for the VFS Global invitation, not after.

Questions

Questions students ask us

  • Can I study at a public institution in Italy with an Algerian bac?

Yes. A first degree needs a secondary diploma after at least 12 years of schooling. You pre-enrol on Universitaly, and the university or AFAM institution decides on your admission.

  • Do I apply to the university or through a national portal?

Both, in that order. Pre-enrolment goes only through Universitaly, for universities and for conservatories and art academies. The school then validates your file.

  • Why do Italian universities show different deadlines?

Each university and AFAM institution sets its own pre-enrolment date per course. The national dates are for the visa: the application must reach the embassy by 30 November 2026 for 2026-2027, and by 31 October 2027 for 2027-2028.

  • What language level do I need?

B2 in the language of your course, covering all four skills. IELTS, TOEFL or a similar certificate for English-taught courses, an Italian certificate at B2 or above for Italian-taught ones.

  • How do I get a study visa from Algeria?

After your school validates your pre-enrolment, VFS Global contacts you for an appointment in Algiers. The Italian Embassy's consular section decides on the type D visa.

  • What happens once I land in Italy?

Apply for your residence permit within 8 working days, with the kit from a post office. You must also be enrolled by 31 January, or the visa is revoked.

  • Can I work while I study?

Yes, up to 20 hours a week and 1,040 hours a year, and full time during official university breaks.

  • Does this directory include private schools?

No. It lists the public universities, conservatories and art academies on the ministry's own lists.
